Keynote Speaker: Wesley McNair

Wesley McNair has been called by poet Philip Levine "one of the great storytellers of contemporary poetry." He has won grants from the Fulbright and Guggenheim foundations, two Rockefeller Fellowships, two NEA grants in creative writing, and an Emmy Award. He has twice been invited to read his poetry by the Library of Congress. He was recently selected for a United States Artists Fellowship as one of America's "finest living artists," and in 2015 was named as the recipient of the PEN New England Award for Literary Excellence in Poetry. His latest book of poems is The Unfastening.

Wesley McNair’s keynote address at the 2019 TYCA Northeast Conference, "What Poetry Has Taught Me," will draw on his work as both poet and educator. His pre-keynote workshop, "The Craft of Free Verse: A Workshop for Teachers, and for Teachers Who Write," will be of interest both to experienced writer-educators and to those seeking a first entry into poetry and its uses in the classroom.

Local Accommodations & Attractions

Nestled on the southern coast, Portland, Maine’s largest city, sits on a peninsula with views of Casco Bay to the south and east, and the White Mountains of New Hampshire to the north and west. The city boasts a vibrant arts district including several museums and galleries, a working waterfront, and a generous offering of nationally honored restaurants. A stay in Portland is memorable with a walk through history on cobblestone streets, time in a quiet corner bookstore, or a ferry ride to the islands of Casco Bay. Local coffee, lobster rolls, ocean views— there’s nothing quite like a visit to Maine’s biggest little city.
