Shining the Beacon on Student Success

The deadline for proposal submissions has past.
The TYCA-NE Team looks forward to seeing you at the conference in Maine!
A financial, political, and cultural storm is swirling around higher education today. Under pressure to increase graduation rates, reduce remediation, and limit student loan debt, colleges across the country analyze data, conduct research and attempt a multitude of strategies to achieve greater rates of “student success.” But what does that term constitute, especially in the English classroom?
As community college educators negotiating the always-evolving definition of success, we have both the opportunity and challenge of helping students to achieve their goals, whatever they may be: continuing their education, landing a good job, or growing and developing in a variety of ways.
In exploring our theme, “Lighthouse in a Storm: Shining a Beam on Student Success,” we look forward to sharing pedagogical, creative, and analytical ideas from community colleges across the Northeast region.
We welcome proposals that explore our theme for presentations, round-table discussions, workshops, and poster sessions.
Proposals may consider, but are not limited to:
Effective partnerships, e.g. dual/concurrent enrollment, two-year to four-year partnerships, and college-community or workplace partnerships
Classroom strategies for student success: communicating expectations; motivating students; retention in high-attrition classes
Engaging students in the online classroom
Developmental education: data & evaluation of pilot programs, assignments supporting success, models for accelerated first-year English
Writing across the curriculum initiatives
Creative content for student engagement
Strategies for motivation and retention
Productive learning communities
Faculty collaborations
Strategies and methods for effective outcomes assessment
Students' diverse writing histories
Curriculum design
21st century communications: multimodal assignments, digital humanities projects
Effective practices for EFL learners
Proposal Format Options:
Presenters may submit individual proposals, for approximately 25 minutes, including Q&A. Groups of two to four presenters may submit full-panel proposals for 50 minutes total.
Individuals or groups may propose poster sessions to visually document research or best practices. Presentations may be combined with other proposals by the program planning committee.
The committee especially welcomes presentations that involve active engagement with the audience with activities or discussions (roundtable, workshop, or other formats.)
We also invite proposals for a five-minute “lightning talk” on “21st century student writing,” for our brunch panel on Saturday.
What to Include:
A 200-250 word abstract elaborating on both the topic and format of the presentation, including information on technology/media needs.
A title and description for the conference program of 30-50 words.
Contact information for each presenter.
Important Dates:
Presenters will be notified by July 1, 2019 and should register by September 6, 2019 to confirm.
